Speed Radar Detectors

Radar detectors are illegal to have in a motor vehicle in Ontario.  Even if the detector is not in operation it is illegal to have it in the car.  Radar Detectors can only be transported in a vehicle if they are in the trunk of the vehicle.

The fine for having a radar detector is approximately 175 dollars and there are no demerit points associated with this ticket.

Radar Detectors work by detecting the radar wave or beam from the speed measuring device being used by the officer.  Radar Detectors are not foolproof and do not work all the time.  They are especially fallible to an officer who does not leave the beam on all the time but just puts it on and off as he sees a speeding vehicle.

The police have what are known as a KGB radar detector detectors.  Where the police radar can be turned on and off, radar detectors have to be kept on all the time.  The police will sit and wait for vehicles to approach their location.   The Radar Detector Detector will sound an alarm as the vehicle approaches the officer identifies and stops the vehicle.

A police officer upon reasonable grounds can search any motor vehicle for a radar detector without first obtaining a warrant to do so.  If you put the detector on you person the officer can consider arresting the driver for obstructing a police officer in the performance of his duties. As an incident to arrest the officer can then search your person, and locate the detector.

A conviction on a driving record for having a radar detector will be looked at severely by any insurance company.  The conviction to the insurance company shows the driver as a person who consistently speeds and tries to circumvent the laws.

Radar Detectors should be considered with caution and are not recommend in Ontario, or by Ontario Traffic Tickets.
